The course's modules
Small Antelope Small Antelope This Module recounts a group introduction and specific species accounts of the group known as the small antelope. In this Module, the followinf species are examined: Common Duiker, Steenbok, and Klipspringer. Remember it is mammals that are only endemic to the Lowveld region.
Medium-sized Antelope Medium-sized Antelope This Module recounts a group summary as well as specific species accounts of the group known as the medium-sized antelope. They include the 3 Reedbuck species, Waterbuck, Grey Rhebok and the ubiquitous impala.
Large Antelope Large Antelope This Module recounts specific species accounts and a tribal introductions of the group known as the large antelope. They include Roan Antelope, Sable Antelope, Tsessebe, Blue Wildebeest, Bushbuck, Nyala, Kudu, and the largest of the South African antelope, the Eland.
Buffalo and Giraffe Buffalo and Giraffe This Module recounts one tribal, one Family and two specific species accounts of the 2 ruminant species not covered in the antelope Modules, namely the Buffalo and Giraffe.
Warthog, Bushpig and Hippopotamus Warthog, Bushpig and Hippopotamus This Module recounts specific species accounts of the even-toed non-ruminant species. This group includes the Bushpig, Warthog and the Hippopotamus. It also includes a summary of Family Suidae (also known as the pig Family).
Rhinoceroses and Zebra Rhinoceroses and Zebra This Module recounts specific species accounts of the odd-toed non-ruminant species and the Family account of the Equids. This means that this Component takes an indepth look at the Black and White Rhinoceros and the Burchell's Zebra.
Elephant and Hyrax Elephant and Hyrax This Module recounts specific species accounts of an unusual related group of species and the Family traits that bind them. This group includes the rock and bush hyrax (or dassie) species, and their closest relative, the African elephant.
Introduction to Carnivores Introduction to Carnivores This Module contains just a single highly detailed component dealing with the Introduction to Carnivores.
Genets, Civets and Mongooses Genets, Civets and Mongooses After a Family introduction, 8 different species of the Viverridae are examined from the specific level including the African Civet, Slender, Grey, White-tailed, Marsh, Yellow, Dwarf and Banded Mongooses. A Component on the Genets (both large and small spotted) in also present.
Hyaenas and Aardwolf Hyaenas and Aardwolf This Modules takes an in-depth look at the Family and 3 species that constitute the extant Hyaena in the Lowveld region of South Africa. We detail the Brown and Spotted Hyaenas, together with the enigmatic Aardwolf.
Cats Cats This Modules takes an in-depth look at the Family and 6 species that constitute the resident African Felids in this specific region of the country. The African Wildcat, Serval, Caracal, Leopard, Lion and Cheetah are explored from a specific perspective.
Jackals and Wild dog Jackals and Wild dog This Modules takes an in-depth look at the Family and 3 species that constitute the African Canids in the Lowveld and surrounding areas. Specifically the Black-backed jackals, side-striped jackals and the African Wild dog.
Weasels, Otters, Polecat and Honey Badger Weasels, Otters, Polecat and Honey Badger This Modules takes an in-depth look at the Family and 5 species that constitute the mixed group of African weasels, polecats, badgers and otters. One an individual basis, the Striped Weasel, Striped Polecat, Honey Badger, Spotted-necked and Clawless otter are examined.
Bushbabies Bushbabies The taxonomy, traits, ancestry, distribution, ecology, social organisation, activity, postures / locomotion, social behaviour, reproduction, parent / offspring behaviour and anti-predator behaviour of the Bush babies is examined from an individual species perspective.
Vervet and Chacma Baboon Vervet and Chacma Baboon The taxonomy, traits, ancestry, distribution, ecology, social organisation, activity, postures / locomotion, social behaviour, reproduction, parent / offspring behaviour and anti-predator behaviour of the Vervet monkey and ubiquitous Chacma Baboon are examined from an individual species perspective.
